Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Q1: What is maid insurance and why is it important in Singapore?

A: Maid insurance, also known as Foreign Domestic Worker (FDW) insurance, provides essential protection for both employers and domestic helpers in Singapore.

It covers:

  • Medical and hospitalisation expenses
  • Personal accident benefits (e.g., death or permanent disability)
  • Repatriation costs
  • Employer liability

This insurance is mandatory and plays a vital role in helping employers manage financial risks if their domestic helper falls ill, gets injured, or passes away while living and working in their household.

Without adequate coverage, employers may be legally and financially responsible for the helper’s medical care and compensation.

A: Yes. The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) mandates that all employers purchase maid insurance before the helper arrives in Singapore or has their work permit renewed.

MOM’s minimum insurance requirements:

  • S$60,000 per year for inpatient care and day surgery
  • S$60,000 personal accident coverage (lump sum)
  • Coverage for the entire work permit period (typically 12 or 24 months)
  • A S$5,000 security bond (for non-Malaysian helpers)

Employers must ensure:

  • The policy is active upon arrival
  • It is renewed before expiry to avoid compliance breaches
  • Claims can be made in the helper’s language (many insurers support this)

A: Most maid insurance policies in Singapore include a combination of mandatory and optional benefits, such as:

Core Inclusions:

  • Hospitalisation and surgical expenses (up to the policy limit)
  • Personal accident coverage (death/permanent disability)
  • Repatriation costs (flight and ambulance home in case of death or total disability)
  • Wage compensation during the helper’s hospital stay
  • Third-party liability if the helper causes injury or damage to others
  • MOM Security Bond protection (up to S$5,000)

Optional Add-ons (in higher-tier plans):

  • Outpatient expenses
    Emergency dental care
  • Special grant or funeral benefit
  • Daily hospital cash benefit
  • COVID-19 related costs

Coverage varies significantly between basic, mid-tier, and premium plans, so employers should assess their helper’s needs and their own risk tolerance.

A: Yes but only in certain plans.

Basic maid insurance policies focus on hospitalisation due to accidents or serious illness, often excluding general outpatient care or chronic conditions. However, comprehensive or upgraded plans may include:

  • General practitioner visits
  • Specialist consultations
  • Emergency dental treatments
  • Non-work-related illness coverage
  • Follow-up visits after surgery or hospitalisation

To ensure more holistic protection:

  • Read the policy wording carefully
  • Add outpatient riders if your helper has pre-existing conditions or frequent healthcare needs
  • Check whether the plan includes co-payment clauses or sub-limits

A: In most cases, maid insurance policies in Singapore are non-refundable and non-transferable, but whether you can claim or get a refund depends on the type of benefit and the reason your helper left.

Here’s how it works:

You can claim if:

  • Your helper falls ill, gets injured, or passes away during the coverage period—even if she leaves the country afterward
  • You incurred hospital or repatriation costs before she left
  • A termination reason is covered, such as medical unfitness or death

You typically can’t claim if:

  • Your helper voluntarily resigns or returns home early without any insured event
  • There was no accident, illness, or liability incident
  • You’re simply cancelling the policy early due to a change in plans

A: Some insurers may offer pro-rated refunds of the premium if no claim has been made, and:

  • You submit proof of early repatriation (e.g., cancelled work permit, flight details)
  • You request cancellation within a specified window (e.g., 30 days after departure)

Note: Not all insurers offer this, and refund policies vary. The MOM-mandated security bond portion is typically not refundable.
